Can you use a virtual mailbox for an LLC or a bank account?

This is the most-asked question about virtual mailboxes, and the providers themselves don't agree. Here's what each one says in its own words, what the USPS address rules mean, and what people report from bank applications.

Three different address fields

Most confusion comes from treating these as one thing:

The address will show it's a mailbox

USPS rules require CMRA customers' mail to carry "PMB" or "#" with the box number. DMM 508.1.8 So even a "real street address" from a virtual mailbox is identifiable as a commercial mail receiving agency address. Some providers sell addresses in office buildings or say they run their own locations, but they're still receiving mail on your behalf under Form 1583.

Before you sign up for this purpose

  1. Check your state's business filing rules for the principal office address.
  2. Ask your bank which address it needs for the operating or physical address, and whether a mailbox is acceptable as the mailing address.
  3. Keep the registered agent separate. Some providers sell one: iPostal1 ($99/yr, listed states), Stable ($25/mo per state), PhysicalAddress.com (free with account). See each provider page.
